Right Career Selection

How do you define a ‘Right Career’? Right Career has an altogether different meaning for every individual. Sadly, though, we’ve created a perception in our minds which define a decent job or a decent career as the one which pays well and hence the one which is within the latest trend or demand in the job market. In fact, as per prevalent perception, there exists a relation between the two that both are directly proportional to each other. But is pay-out the only criteria to define the right career? One works hard, spends entire life and lot of money to settle down on a career option. What if the person involved isn’t satisfied on an intrinsic level with his work profile? Research says that, over a period of time, people are most elated and satisfied when they are crazy with the fundamental nature of their work. Given a chance, every individual would like to switch to a career in which work profile matches with the comfort zone. If not, even a job with the foremost lucrative remuneration and perks wouldn’t be ready to fill the void in this deep dark place inside one’s heart, mind and soul.

Hence, the crucial, and therefore the first and foremost, step is to make the right career selection. Note that when I use the word ‘right’ selection and not the ‘best’ or the ‘correct’ one, it means in line with my comfort zone. Actually, these words – ‘Right’, ‘Correct’ and ‘Best’ are comparative. What is Right, Correct or Best Career for me, may not be the same for some other person. It simply implies that one must understand which career would be best suitable for him; one doesn’t have to be compelled to pursue Engineering simply because his elder brother is a terrific engineer, or his parents want him to become one, or because it’s the newest trendsetter. Every individual is born with a unique mind, sensibilities, skills, abilities, pace and interests.

Let’s take the instance of Mr. Chetan Bhagat. I mean, who doesn’t know him today! This IIT engineer and IIM management graduate couldn’t find solace together with his so-called well-endowed and reputable job with an enormous MNC bank and hence eventually turned to his passion for writing and brought a sort of revolution within the literary arena in India for the youth together with his natural, simple and articulate writing skills highlighting the main issues faced by today’s Indian youth in the most subtle manner. Do you think Mr. Bhagat would have been as successful as he’s today in his MNC work profile? I doubt. Eminent Career Counsellors say that Scientific Career Assessments (Including Psychometric Assessment, Aptitude test, Personality Assessment etc.) followed by Professional Career Counselling by an experienced Career Counsellor can help one to assess their potential and match the compatible Career for himself / herself. This can prevent dissatisfaction with employment later in career.

Now the million-dollar question is: How can one make the ‘right’ career selection? The solution is: Self-awareness. One must decipher one’s own personality, interests, values and aptitude and completely envisage these aspects. Hence the most apt and logical tool for this is a Career Assessment Test followed up by Career Counselling by a trusted and recognized institution. It’s a sort of assistance to an individual, especially the youth in their prime, to know his own internal make-up so as to form the right career choices.

If considered and followed within the right manner by people, it might undoubtedly diminish the urgent issues which our country is facing like unemployment, under-employment, job dissatisfaction, etc. to a substantial level. And it might be an immense aid to our constantly wavering job market and overall economy.
